I think we left Kanab at around 8 am. Kanab was interesting because the area was used for many of the old western movies. There were posts all over town talking about the movies filmed there and the actors/actresses the lived there for the filming. Rt 89 is a great road passing many of the great National Parks in UT. 2 lane and well kept. The mileage that we were to cover was around 325 but the heat was impressive! At one point I saw 97 degrees on my dash. We did the road through the park and I have to stay the visuals were stunning. There was also apparent damage from forest fires some years ago. You could see forest fires off in the distance and one fairly close.
Everyone there was focused on the fires, both near and far. It was obvious the winds were picking and the smoke jumpers were arriving. As we started our return to Rt 89 the fire grew quickly.
So we did the grownup thing and left the park. We continued our ride and stopped at the home of Butch Cassidy.
If I had grown up here I would also have chosen a life of crime! It was hot and we were wearing down. We were now stopping every 40 minutes to chill and drink plenty of water. We arrived in Provo and I was running on fumes but made it to Ray’s house. Now a nice cool shower!
