Hurricane Isaias gave me a couple of perfect days for service

Yes, a couple of days with rain, wind and high 60’s.  This also included 12 tornadoes in central NC but the closest one came was 3 miles away.  This is very unusual for this area.  We don’t get the big tracking tornadoes like the Midwest.  Ours are more like a microburst very localized like to a house and a barn or car.  So what to do?

It’s time for the annual bike service.  October is the anniversary for both bikes.   The garage was the perfect place to be on a dreary Saturday.  The BMW was first with 5W - 40 full synthetic and a BMW oil filter.  This is something that every rider should master.  Local dealers are now charging $450 for this service and it takes little more than 45 minutes to complete.  It makes ownership much more reasonable if you master this and the final drive oil change plus flush the brake fluid.  The brake fluid is every other year and I installed speed bleeders last year making it a very simple job.  I was in no hurry today so I drained the oil and removed the filter.  I let it drain for 2 hours then installed the new filter and drain plug with oil.  All in I was in the garage about 45 minutes.

Sunday came with tornado warnings so it was the Goldwing’s turn.  I did it the same way, allowing it to drain for 2 hours then finishing the job.  There is a great deal of satisfaction when the job is complete.  Looking back on the bike’s history it looks like the final drive oil change is due so I will take care of that this week.  The final drive is a very simple job, just drain and fill.

Took the BMW out for 45 minutes and checked the oil level and it was perfect.  Today I will take the Wing out for a spin and check the oil level in it.  Saturday & Sunday were service and Monday/Tuesday are test rides to check things.

Now I can take off and go somewhere!
