NC State Parks - Mayo River & Haw River

I was up early, too early!  The night was cold and I had hung the hammock up too close to the fire circle.  Every night Will builds a big fire and all the campers sit around and tell stories(lies) about their adventures.  Some bring their own beverages but very seldom does anyone get out of line.  Well the night was cold and it appeared that the group of late arrivals weren't prepared for the cold so they kept a big fire going and the group talked until 4:00am, so I didn't get much sleep.  I had intended to stay 2 nights but to move the hammock to a more distant site is the same as packing to leave.  So I headed home, another lesson learned.

Mayo Mountain State Park

It was an easy ride down familiar roads.  I had planned to stop at one of my usual diners on the road but the times have been hard up in this area and both have closed.

This park is what is known as a linear park, like the Eno River this park stretches for miles along the Mayo River.  It is not continuous so there are many entrances.  It is known for the Blue Herons and the Waterfall at Deshazo Mill access.  That was a 1.2 mile hike but my foot wouldn't allow it.

Beautiful scenery with multiple lakes and many shelters for picnickers.  It's one of the newer parks established in 2003.

Haw River State Park

This was one of my disappointments.  The full name of the park is The Summit Environmental Education and Conference Center.  It is at the headwaters of the Haw River.  It looks to be an environmental teaching center.  So I decided to ask the ugly question.  How polluted is the Haw River?  Well, it didn't go well.  She claimed she didn't know of any pollution problems in the Haw River and that this was the headwaters of the Haw River and there is no industry there.  I was not satisfied with this so I politely suggested that they change their name to: THE HEADWATERS OF THE HAW RIVER SUMMIT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AHD CONFERENCE CENTER. So, I left!   Ok, I didn't get much sleep and I hadn't found a lunch place yet and it was 2:00pm. So, yes I was cranky!!  Add to this that I needed a bathroom break and I stopped at 3 gas stations that claimed that all their bathrooms were out of order,  It was getting to be a crisis so I headed to an old mill, Saxapahaw General Store 30 minutes that I knew would be open and had a great lunch to boot!

All together 335 miles and an overnight camping in Willville!  Nice 2 days.
